Our Lineage

Santosha Yoga has deep, direct energetic roots reaching back to the yoga lineage of Swami Kripalu, from the Gujarat region of India.

Jai Bhagwan!

You may occasionally hear our Instructors give thanks, in celebration and recognition of this Lineage of Light. The Sanskrit words and some interpretations are below.

Jai Dadaji

Jai Bapuji

Jai Gurudev

Jai Mataji

Jai Bhagwan!

Jai = hail or victory, celebration, honoring

Dadaji = literally in Sanskrit “beloved grandfather.” In our tradition, this refers to Yogi Amrit Desai’s spiritual grandfather, Lakulish, an incarnation of Shiva. Dadaji was Swami Kripalu’s guru, a fully spiritual being, specifically known as Lakulish, the 28th and last incarnation of Shiva.

Bapuji = literally in Sanskrit “beloved father.” In our tradition, this refers to Yogi Amrit Desai’s guru, Swami Kripalu. Kripalu means “compassion” in Sanskrit, and this was a shortened and affectionate variation of Shri Kripalvananda.

Gurudev = literally in Sanskrit “beloved or dear teacher.” In our tradition, this refers to Yogi Amrit Desai.

Mataji = literally in Sanskrit “beloved mother.” In our tradition, we are referring to Amrit Desai’s wife, Urmilla Desai, who was also a disciple of Bapuji.

Bhagwan = literally in Gujarati “source / spirit / the universal divine.” This word is similar to the Sanskrit word “Bhagavan” that is more well-known. Bhagwan is the same word in the Gujarat dialect.

Most often, we will offer:

Jai Bhagwan!

Which is similar to Namaste and Sat Nam in other traditions.

Most of our instructors have been trained in the I AM Yoga lineage.

I AM = Integrative Amrit Method

Many of us have spent hours with Gurudev Amrit Desai, Yogeshwari Kamini Desai, and many of the senior teachers in the Amrit / I AM Yoga tradition.

Each in our own way has somehow been directly connected to Lineage of Light. We connect through our Senior Teachers and the I AM Yoga community, to Gurudev Amrit Desai, to his teacher Swami Kripalu, and to Kripalu’s guru Dadaji, who is understood to be a fully spiritual being.
